Live/Work/Play Like Ken Fulk In SOMA, $8.9M

Some San Francisco properties are destined to become legends, and Ken Fulk’s SOMA Magic Factory is one of them. The hub of Fulk’s wide-ranging creative endeavors and his home since 2007, this 1908 loft building has been ground zero for his firm’s work designing public and private interiors plus some memorably extravagant events. The vaguely-Renaissance Revival structure started life as a furniture showroom and factory and would go on to become Mr. Leather, the S&M-centric apparel manufacturer and retailer that was a landmark institution in the town’s gay community.Fulk’s top floor residence is a wide open space filled with a predictably unpredictable and eclectic collection, plus an adjacent rooftop terrace. He took the concept of ‘living above the store’ to a new level: World: “This was the space I had long dreamed of, where I would not only house my business, but my private life as the two had become increasingly intertwined. I envisioned living upstairs on the top floor with my husband, Kurt, and our three golden retrievers, and below would be the design factory (more Warhol thanGM) where all sorts of talented people could gather and collaborate.” It would go on to become one of San Francisco’s great party venues where Fulk could bring together a diverse guest list ranging from celebrities to the design community.Photo Credit: Douglas FriedmanPhoto Credit: Space Monkey FilmsPhoto Credit: Space Monkey Films“This building made my business what it is today,” says renowned designer and creative director Ken Fulk, who purchased the four-story building at 310 Seventh Street 15 years ago as his firm was rapidly expanding with growing roles as creative directors and event producers as well as large-scale projects in hospitality and product design.”“It’s bittersweet to have outgrown the Magic Factory but commitment to San Francisco remains—our 75-plus staff members will stay here in SoMa and I’m committed to investing in some of our city’s finest cultural landmarks like Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, Tosca and Boulevard.”Photo Credit: Space Monkey FilmsPhoto Credit: Douglas FriedmanMore: Go to the listing for additional images, details, and floor plans. • Perfect Mid-Century Simplicity, $2.2M,Philip Ferrato

    Perfect Mid-Century Simplicity, $2.2M

Long considered one of California’s most influential Modernist architects, with seven decades as a theorist and teacher, as a founder of SCI-ARC, and over a hundred private residential commissions, Ray Kappe [1927-2019] had his first private residential commission in 1954 with this austerely simple, pavilion-like dwelling for Gordon & Hildred Goetschel in Glendale, just a few years after his graduation from UC Berkeley’s architecture program. It’s been beautifully restored by Andreas E.G. Larsson, a Swedish transplant to Los Angeles, who, bringing his skills as a master carpenter and professional photographer has adroitly breathed life into a number of Mid-Century gems with his firm HabHouse. In classic Mid-Century style, it presents a minimalist street front, not unlike an isometric drawing, and opening up in the back to the view beyond the pool and patio. What We Love: it’s an exquisitely composed linear structure, one that forecasts Kappe’s future design language– the interplay between light, shadow and structure, indoors and out, with redwood, glass and masonry. Seven decades after it was built, it still reflects the optimism and passion of young architects and their clients after WWII.More: Go to the listing for additional images and details. An outstanding opportunity to acquire the work of a globally recognized architect, represented by Joey Kiralla and Michelle St. Clair-Zsakany of Sotheby’s International Realty Los Feliz Brokerage and co-listed with Nate Cole at Superstuctur.Photo Credit: Cameron Carothers for Sotheby’s International RealtyThe post Perfect Mid-Century Simplicity, $2.2M appeared first on California Home+Design.
